The Town of Chatom was founded in 1904 at the intersection of Highway 56 and 17. Being located in the center of the county, it became the county seat in 1907.

In 1949 the town became the largest municipality in Washington County. Today the town has a population of 1205 and is proud of its many recreational and community-based activities, such as the Chatom Community Center and Walking Trail, Lake Ellis, Dixie Youth Ball Park, Chatom Mardi Gras Parade and Christmas Parade, and Annual Independence Day Celebration.

Chatom is the home to a modern Public Library, Hospital/Nursing Home, Public parks, and a beautiful 18-hole golf course. It is also home to the Cray Valley, a leader in chemical products and safety throughout the world.
