Saturday, March 4th, Washington County Public Library hosted its 3rd Annual Library Charity Drawdown! After expenses, over $60,000 was netted for library programs and services. Funds will be used for library services and programs, including matching grants to secure additional funding for programs supporting workforce development, adult education, children’s programs, and veterans services. “This event is so important in order for our library to continue to provide valuable services for our rural area,” says Library Director, Jessica Ross. “Washington County Public Library is unique among public libraries in Alabama in that only about 20% of our funding comes from traditional government “tax” funding of any kind. All other funding for services and programming is generated through fundraisers, private donations, and in-house grant-writing, which makes fundraisers like Drawdown so vital for us. We appreciate the support of the many individuals, sponsoring businesses/industries, organizations, and contributors who help make our fundraisers and our library such a success!”

After lots of suspense, Brooke Dolbare was announced as the Grand Prize winner. In addition to the $10,000 Grand Prize, participants were entered to win lots of amazing, locally-donated prizes such as two cases of T-Roy’s Swamp Shake (Original and Spicy) and a cast iron skillet, Mini Mart gas and Walmart grocery gift cards, a Bienville Bites Food Tour package, a one-basket deep fryer from Thompson Gas, a Char-Griller combo grill from Badcock Furniture in Citronelle, a $100 Visa gift card from McIntosh Credit Union, and a basket of amazing goodies from local artisans, including items from Chatom Yoga and Wellness, Hunting Down South, Jim Dumas Woodworking, A Gathering Place, Shuckers Seafood, and Sweet Cheeks Bakery.  Top Sponsors for the event included Town of Chatom, Washington County Hospital and Nursing Home, The First Bank, Millry Communication, Chatom Motor Company, and Long Wood Land Management.
